Let’s drop the word: grunge. Eddie Vedder swapped his ukulele for a Fender that crackles, distortion pedal at full blast and amp cracked at eleven (as in The Is Spinal Tap). I caricature? the riff to numbers of Power of Right irresistibly reminiscent of the hits-in-your-face of the SubPop years, to such an extent that one cannot help but sketch a knowing smile. Vedder the formidable singer rediscovers the cries which made him resound the tremolo to the depths of the auditorium of Verdun. Cleverly, he doesn’t tap on his old nail all the time. The very melodic fallout today is rather soft-grunge, acoustic and good to sing, closer to Blue Rodeo than to Pearl Jam. Nevertheless, we have there, that means, revisiting. Considering the fact that Pearl Jam already owed a lot to riffs at the grind of a Pete Townshend with The Who, we are in the decantation of the decantation. Should we rejoice or complain? Depends on how much you missed it. Word of a rather skeptical old fan.
