Residents of Ozenx-Montestrucq, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, went to Poland on their own initiative to help evacuate civilians.
With their two personal cars, a couple from Béarn went to Poland to look for Ukrainian refugees. They are back, with, on board, exhausted women and children, to whom they offer asylum in their village. The mayor, Alain Lenglet, came to welcome Didier Hoog, the organizer of the refugee convoy. “He wears his heart on his sleeve, he can’t stand injustice”comments the aedile.
Sabine Meyer followed her husband. Four people have joined them and are back with 19 refugees. The guest rooms of the couple’s house are now occupied, while village solidarity is taking place through accommodation or donations of clothing. Katakina, a Ukrainian refugee, came with her three children from the suburbs of kyiv (Ukraine), where her husband is fighting. “We are impressed by the welcome of the people who help us in France”she says.
