The prices of basic necessities are on the rise on the African continent, due to the war in Ukraine.
In this bakery in Lagos, Nigeria, there is no electricity without a gasoline generator. Problem : because of the war in Ukraine, the price of fuel has exploded, which has direct effects on the price of basic products. “Production costs have increased enormously, as everything is linked, the price of bread has also increased by 40%”says Julius Adewalemanager of the bakery. A surge which is also explained by that of the cost of cereals, a raw material massively imported from Russia and Ukraine by African countries.
Moreover, the price of fertilizers to produce it has increased by 30% since the start of the war. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, market prices are becoming inaccessible to residents. A situation that pushes the UN and the IMF to sound the alarm: organizations fear a global food crisis at levels never seen before.
