The two men were hit at midday while driving with a Ukrainian civilian, also injured, told AFP Danylo Shapovalov, a doctor engaged with the Ukrainian forces who took care of the victims.
The Ukrainian authorities quickly accused their Russian enemies of having fired on the journalists, but the origin of the shots was difficult to establish immediately.
AFP journalists who were in this area on Sunday heard artillery and smaller arms fire there.
A reporter saw the body of the slain reporter, who had his identification papers on him, including a New York Times credential.
It is Brent Renaud, 50, a photographer and director, the American newspaper said in a press release. He had worked for The New York Times in the past, but did not work for it in Ukraine, according to this statement.
He is the first foreign journalist to die since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
The other American journalist, apparently slightly injured, testified in a video posted on social networks.
