Businesses affected by Ottawa convoy will be able to claim $10,000

The federal government announces that Ottawa businesses that have suffered the impacts of the weeks of demonstrations of the trucking convoy will be able to request up to $10,000 to compensate for their losses.

Ottawa-Vanier MP and Treasury Board President Mona Fortier says the portal where applications can be made will be launched on March 15.

The government had previously announced an investment of $20 million to help businesses affected by the convoy.

Mme Fortier said small businesses have shown incredible resilience throughout the pandemic, but especially during the three weeks when anti-vaccine protesters occupied the heart of the city.

She said the occupation had forced many small businesses in downtown Ottawa to close or reduce their hours of operation, resulting in significant loss of revenue.

Mme Fortier added that Gatineau businesses will also be eligible for government assistance if they suffered losses during the protest.

The funding will help businesses deal with lost sales and other additional costs caused by the protest, such as hiring security or losing inventory that had to be discarded.
