On Thursday March 10, 2022, European leaders will meet at the Château de Versailles to discuss the Ukrainian situation. And it will not be the first time that this place will be used to evoke the war.

The Palace of Versailles. Since its foundation in the 17th century, French leaders have welcomed sovereigns from all over the planet during exceptional meetings. Thursday March 10, Emmanuel Macron will be no exception to the rule. He will receive the Heads of State and European governments to discuss the war in Ukraine. It is here that the newly elected President Macron receives Vladimir Putin in 2017.

In history, Versailles has established itself as the diplomatic framework par excellence. On June 28, 1919, it was in the Hall of Mirrors that Georges Clémenceau signed a peace treaty between the Germans and the allies which marked the end of the First World War. Same thing in 1946, at the end of the Second World War. Many heads of state have used it to stage power, like General de Gaulle or of Francois Mitterand. Tomorrow, at the European Union summit, it is again the war that will feed the discussions in Versailles.
