A Ukrainian journalist who has lived in France for 16 years has decided to return to her country to find her relatives near Kiev, the capital. She recounts her journey and her feelings torn between shock and amazement.

Friday, February 25, a friend accompanies the Ukrainian journalist to Charles-de-Gaulle airport in Paris. She is not a war reporter but wants to find her family, to see what they are going through. She thus leaves her husband and two children in France. His parents live near the capital. Her father, 61, is a surgeon. She finds him in action. A man and his son have just arrived at the hospital. They come from Kharkiv, a city ravaged by Russian bombs. “You are a brave boy, you are brave”she told him.

A few minutes later, she learns that the little boy has actually lost his brother in the bombings. His father has not yet told him this terrible news. Further on, his mother takes care of a little boy. She is a pediatrician in the same hospital. The little one’s grandmother bursts into tears at what just happened. Back home, near Kiev, her mother testifies that she never thought she would experience war. “We even started saying ‘I love you’ to each other more often,my God”she says in tears.
