The Islamic State (IS) organization confirmed Thursday, March 10, the death of its leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hachimi al-Qourachi, a little over a month after the announcement of his death by the United States in a operation in Syria, and appointed his successor. The jihadists have “pledged allegiance to Abu Hassan al-Hachimi al-Qurachi, the emir of the believers and caliph of the Muslims” said the group’s spokesman, Abu Omar al-Muhajir, in an audio recording posted on Telegram.

The deaths of the former IS leader as well as his previous spokesman are also confirmed in the recording. The former IS leader blew himself up during a US special forces operation in northwestern Syria, an area under jihadist control, US President Joe Biden said on February 3. last.

The new leader of the radical Sunni organization, the group’s third since its creation, has so far made little headlines and the group’s press release does not give any further details on his identity. “We just don’t know his identity”, said Tore Hamming, a researcher at King’s College London specializing in the study of jihadist movements. According to Colin Clarke, research director at the Soufan Center, a New York-based think-tank, IS chose “an unknown because the bench has thinned considerably”.
