A seat had been free since the ousting of Russian Nikita Mazepin four days earlier, linked to the context of the war in Ukraine. Haas announced the identity of its second driver for the 2022 season on Wednesday March 9. The American team has decided to call on a former member of the house by bringing Kevin Magnussen back.
The Dane, who drove at Haas for four years (between 2017 and 2020), will support Mick Schumacher from the first Grand Prix of the season, March 20. His team has announced that he will also take part in testing in Barcelona on Thursday, where test driver Pietro Fittipaldi will also do some laps.

For his part, Kevin Magnussen confided that he “was obviously surprised but also very excited upon receiving the call” of the last. “I was briefed as much as possible on the development of the VF-22 single-seater and its potential. There is work but I’m already in a hurry to be back on the track“, he added.
The Dane has 119 Formula 1 starts in total and has already been on the podium once, with a second place in Australia in 2014, in his very first race in the premier class, at the wheel of a McLaren-Mercedes. He had not remained inactive in 2021, competing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship (with a victory in Detroit) and passing a lead at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
