Djokovic, now second in the world behind Daniil Medvedev, is still trying to get permission to enter the United States. This was announced via the BNP Paribas Open Twitter account on Tuesday evening.
The current rule is that foreign visitors must be fully vaccinated to enter the United States, which is not the case for the 34-year-old tennis player.
The organization of the tournament, which is in contact with the Serbian team, also makes it known that “it has not been determined whether [Djokovic] will participate in the event by obtaining approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to enter the country,”
It’s far from the first time that his refusal to get vaccinated has caused problems for Djokovic. He was deported from Australia in early January after a court battle that dragged on for several days. He had therefore not participated in the Australian Open.
In his absence, Rafael Nadal got his hands on a 21and Grand Slam trophy, a men’s record. The Spaniard thus overtook Roger Federer and Djokovic, who both have 20.
The Serb has only taken part in one tournament since the start of the year, that of Dubai, where he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the Czech Jiri Vesely.
Indian Wells’ main draw clashes are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
