In France, one in four families is a single parent, and the majority of them are women who raise their children alone. Spotlight on the daily life of one of them, who must juggle her career and take care of her family.
Every evening, it’s the race for Aline Dramé, a single mother in Bonneuil-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne). At 5:30 p.m., she leaves her job and picks up her children from school. She has been raising them alone for six years. To cope with her busy schedule, she has developed a very precise organization.
At home, the marathon continues. We have to do the homework, and cook dinner. “I would have liked the dad to be there and help me on a daily basis. (…) The children, we made them together. It’s true that it’s more fun when the dad is there, and he participate”, recognizes Aline Dramé. Finding time for outings with friends has become almost impossible for the mother. “But hey, I wanted them so badly, it doesn’t matter!”, she relativizes. According to INSEE, the number of single-parent families is constantly increasing. In eight cases out of 10, it is single women who raise their children.
