United States | Much more private job creation than expected in October

(Washington) Job creation in the private sector increased in the United States in October and far exceeded expectations, driven by the economic recovery which marks a new acceleration after the wave of contaminations linked to the Delta variant of COVID-19 .

Last month, 571,000 private jobs were created, according to the monthly survey by business services firm ADP released Wednesday.

Analysts were expecting only 370,000 jobs to be created. In September, 523,000 jobs had been created, according to data revised downward and also released Wednesday.

“The labor market showed new momentum last month, surging from the third quarter average,” bringing the number of jobs created in 2021 to “nearly 5 million,” said Nela Richardson, economist chief of ADP, in the statement.

“The service sector drove this increase and production recorded its highest number of job creations of the year,” she said.

Almost a third of the new jobs (185,000) were in fact created in the hotel and leisure sector.

“The job market is picking up steam as the Delta wave of the pandemic ends,” noted Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, also quoted in the press release.

He detailed that “job creation is accelerating in all sectors, and in particular in large companies. As long as the pandemic remains contained, further significant job gains are likely in the months to come ”.

Job creation in the private sector is seen as a first indication, more or less reliable, of official employment and unemployment figures, which will be published on Friday.

Private and public sectors combined, 400,000 job creations are expected, despite global supply difficulties which still hamper production, and recruitment problems which also prevent some companies from operating at full capacity.

The unemployment rate should be down very slightly, to 4.7% against 4.8% in September.
