The CAQ and its palliative nationalism

Thanks to the Bloc Québécois, the House of Commons adopted a motion to condemn a redrawing of the federal electoral map that is disadvantageous for Quebec.

We are not sorry for this motion, of course.

When a man drowns, we will rejoice that he nevertheless manages to keep his head or the tip of his nose above water for a while longer. But this dam cannot hold for long.

Demography

What René Lévesque called the demographic “drowning” of Quebecers by Canadian immigration policy will become more radical in the years to come. We are condemned to disappear in this federation.

But in the parallel world of provincial politics, we pretend not to see this reality.

This is how on Twitter, Sonia Lebel, an important figure of the CAQ, but also, and perhaps above all, a representative of its ultra-federalist wing, allowed herself a lunar comment.

I quote her: “I am very happy to see federal MPs overwhelmingly vote for a motion by the Bloc Québécois asking that Quebec not lose any seats during the redrawing of the federal electoral map. Quebec must continue to have a strong voice in Ottawa”.

We will not insult Sonia Lebel to believe that she does not know how to count and that she is a stranger to the iron law of demography.

Lebel

She knows that we are condemned to weigh less and less in Canada. She also knows that Francophones are condemned to weigh less and less in Quebec. And his government refuses during this time to impose the French CEGEP. So let’s ask the question bluntly: what is the horizon of the Caquismo? Answer: that Quebec does not regress too quickly in Canada.

Let’s translate: that it disappears without it being too painful.

The Caquismo is to nationalism what palliative care is to medicine.
