In Ukraine, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, that of Zaporizhiafell into Russian hands on Friday 4 February. 19/20 journalist Jean-Christophe Batterypresent on the set, takes stock of the situation and explains to us what a nuclear power plant can withstand.
Friday, February 4, the nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia (Ukraine) East fallen in the hands of the Russians. “There was no rise in the level of radioactivity in the area. The area which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, one of the four Ukrainian power plants. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirms: all the sensors are working, and they haven’t detected anything”reassures the journalist of 19/20 Jean-Christophe Batterypresent on the board.
“The concrete domes that cover the steel cores of nuclear power plants have been very resilient since 9/11. (…) But if we bombard with insistence on these domes, we can cause leaks. Warning : not nuclear explosions, leaks”continues the journalist. The main weak point of nuclear power plants is the cooling system: it must function continuously, even in times of armed conflict.
