For a few days, French people have been organizing to go to Ukraine and fight. In the 19/20, Thursday March 3, several testify and relate their motivations.
Taking to the road and taking up arms to fight alongside Ukraine has been the desire displayed by some French people since the start of the war. A 26-year-old former soldier, interviewed by the editorial staff of 19/20, Thursday March 3, confides his wish to fight. Married, father of three children, he claims to know the risks. He has spent 5,000 euros on equipment and is organizing to join the Ukrainian armed forces.
On social networks, self-help groups are being created, in particular to find equipment or travel together to Ukraine. Some have already almost arrived, like a 25-year-old Frenchman, a former foreign legion soldier. “There, we are at the door of a Third World War, and I do not want that to happen. I am here to protect the Ukrainians, but also the Europeans, and indirectly my family”, he explains. French civilians have the right to take up arms provided they officially join the Ukrainian foreign legion, and comply with international humanitarian law. On the other hand, serving soldiers are not allowed to do so.
