A dozen Syrian migrants and a German skipper docked at the commercial port of Porto-Vecchio in Corse-du-Sud, on the night of Tuesday 2 to Wednesday 3 November, around midnight, reports France Bleu RCFM. This is only the second time in ten years that migrants have landed in Corsica.

According to initial information from France Bleu RCFM, their boat left Turkey but broke down overnight in the Mediterranean. They were taken care of by customs who took them to the port. An investigation is opened to understand the reasons and conditions of the Syrians’ trip.

The ten migrants are all from the same family. They are six women, including a seven months pregnant, two men and two children of one and three years, according to the mayor of the city. They were taken care of by the emergency services and the services of the municipality and the State. They have had a medical examination and are currently staying in a holiday residence.

The mayor of Porto Vecchio, Jean-Christophe Angelini, believes that he “belongs to humanity and dignity” to welcome these migrants, to house them, to feed them and to treat them. Invited on France Bleu RCFM on Wednesday morning, he said, “without the slightest ambiguity”, that Corsica must welcome them and “does not even understand how this debate can exist”. On the other hand, he can hear that there is a debate on whether to keep them or not, but this is, according to him, another subject that refers to the lack of means.
