Hansjörg Wyss, one of Switzerland’s richest men, said on Wednesday March 2 that he had been offered to buy Chelsea, as the Premier League club’s owner, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, set back after the invasion of Ukraine.

“Abramovich is one of Putin’s closest advisers and friends”Wyss told Swiss newspaper Blick. “Like all the other oligarchs, he is panicked. He wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly. Along with three other people, I received an offer on Tuesday to buy the club.” This announcement comes after the declaration of Abramovich, who plans to entrust his shares to the administrators of the Chelsea Foundation.

“I’m giving myself four or five more days to think it over. Abramovich is asking too much at the moment. Chelsea owe him £2bn, except Chelsea have no money. That means those who buy Chelsea have to compensate Abramovich.”explained the 86-year-old businessman, founder of the medical equipment manufacturing company Synthes.

The Swiss finally said he would not do this operation “Alone” : “If I buy Chelsea, it will be with a consortium of six to seven investors”. For the time being, Abramovich is not on the growing list of individuals or companies targeted by British sanctions for their links with Vladimir Putin’s regime.
