The curfew was lifted on the morning of Monday February 28 in Kiev, as the Russian army paused in its offensive. A break that could precede an assault, as the presence of a column of armored vehicles a few tens of kilometers from the capital suggests. The weekend fighting around Kiev has already caused severe destruction.
To get out of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, you have to cross countless roadblocks manned by armed civilians. After 30 km, the journalists of France Télévisions arrive at Irpin (Ukraine). The entrance to the city is held by residents. One of them, who holds the roadblock and to whom the army provided a weapon, explains that fighting took place on Sunday February 27, at the other end of the city. Other residents leave the city as quickly as possible, traumatized by the clashes.
In the other entrance to the city ofIrpinwhere the fighting was heaviest, four bodies of Russian soldiers lie on the ground. Two enemy tanks were destroyed by the Ukrainian army, which succeeded in repelling the onslaught of Russian soldiers. However, there is no time to celebrate victory: the enemy is only about twenty kilometers away. At the other end of the city, a bridge was destroyed by the Ukrainian army. A way to prevent the Russian army from quickly reaching the capital. “The battle taking place in this region is absolutely crucial for the continuation of the conflict, because Irpin is one of the very last locks before Kiev“, explains Marc De Chalvron, correspondent at Irpin.
