In video: the 2022 Volkswagen Taos put to the test

The Volkswagen Taos becomes the entry-level utility vehicle for the German manufacturer.

In this video capsule, journalist Julien Amado analyzes the brand’s newcomer during a test drive during the winter period.

From the outset, Julien points out that even if it is categorized as a sub-compact SUV, the Taos has fairly generous dimensions that place it at the top of its category in terms of cargo space. Indeed, it measures about ten centimeters more than the Kia Seltos, itself quite spacious.

Thanks to its size, the Taos has a load volume of 790 liters for the front-wheel drive version. Space shrinks to 705 liters when the Taos employs all-wheel drive.

Comfort put first

“To drive, the Taos is a very comfortable vehicle. Whether it’s the quality of the ride or the seats. Overall, we see that Volkswagen wants to maximize comfort,” comments our journalist.

Julien Amado also emphasizes the good soundproofing of the cabin. However, he qualifies that the ride isn’t particularly engaging. In addition, the direction – although it is precise – remains very over-assisted.

Under the hood is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It generates 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Models equipped with front-wheel drive come with an eight-speed gearbox.

All-wheel-drive versions instead offer a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. “The performances are very correct, [mais] it’s not dazzling,” says the journalist. In addition, fuel consumption varies between 7.6 and 8.5 L/100 km.
