Waste sorting much simpler from this Tuesday in part of the Var

The pots of yogurt or fresh creamthe packaging filmsthe Cans, cans of drinks, coffee capsules or even the tube of toothpaste… No more jealousy! All these packages (full list here) can, this Tuesday, March 1, be sorted in almost half of the Var department. They must now be placed in the “gray” bin or container. The Sittomat* extends the sorting instructions for plastic and metal packaging.

For Gilles Vincent, president of the intermunicipal syndicate, “it’s a revolution”. “Our citizens will no longer ask themselves questions when sorting their waste. They will only have three solutions left: paper and cardboard in the yellow bin, glass in the green bins and now all plastic and metal in the bins. A major communication campaign has been launched and new stickers will be affixed to private containers. With these much simpler instructions, we hope _collect even more sorted waste_ specifies the president.

Sorting plastic and metal packaging, mandatory on 31/12/2022 with the law on energy transitionis now possible thanks to the modernization of sorting centres. “They are now equipped with optical sorters capable of separating the different plastic resins present in our packaging” explains Christine Leuthy-Molina, Citeo’s South East regional director.

As the La Seyne-sur-Mer sorting center is not equipped with these optical sorters, the waste collected in the Var will be transported to the Gard, after being compacted in a company in La Garde. But the Sittomat should have its own modernized sorting center by 2024-2025. Talks are underway to build it on land east of Toulon.

* The Joint Intermunicipal Syndicate for the Transport and Treatment of Household Waste in the Toulon Area manages the waste of 38 municipalities in the Toulon Provence Mediterranean Metropolis, the Southern Sainte-Baume Agglomeration Community, the Communities of Municipalities of the Vallée du Gapeau and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, i.e. 588,000 inhabitants.
