An endless crowd. At least 100,000 people demonstrated in the streets of Berlin in solidarity with Ukraine on Sunday February 27, a spokesman for the police in the German capital told AFP. The organizers themselves mentioned 500,000 participants.

The demonstrators, gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, the building of the Chamber of Deputies, displayed flags in the yellow and blue colors of the Ukrainian flag. “Berlin 670 km from the front line”, “Stop the killer”, “No Third World War” appeared on the placards in the procession.

“My mother is (a refugee) in a cellar (…), my father at home, on the ground floor in a northern district of Kiev”testified for AFP one of the participants, Valeria Moiseeva, a 35-year-old Ukrainian, pregnant. “I think it is important that Germany is committed to democracy in Europe and that is also our responsibility”assured for his part, Hans Georg Kieler, 49 years old.

Since Thursday, rallies have been held every day in the German capital, notably in front of the imposing Russian embassy, ​​built on Unter den Linden Avenue, one of the main arteries leading to the Brandenburg Gate. Germany hosts more than 300,000 people of Ukrainian origin or nationality on its soil, as well as a large Russian diaspora, particularly in Berlin.
