Jean-Baptiste Alix is a Frenchman who has lived in Kiev for eight years. With his partner and daughters aged 2 and 6, he has been stuck in the country since the start of the war in Ukraine. “The outside world is an enemy, you have to stay at home and keep the children busy. We must try to be happy as much as possible and try to live in another world”, he explains. The expatriate tried to flee the country on the first day of the fighting, but the French embassy in Ukraine dissuaded him.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are 1,050 French nationals in Ukraine. The instructions are not to take the road and to stay at home. Mohamed Elbrahimi, who was in Kiev for work for two days, slept in the metro before returning to his rental apartment. “The French passport is also a danger for us when we know the position of France. I want to leave on my own before it’s too late”, he confides.
