The war in Ukraine is forcing tens of thousands of Ukrainians to leave their country. According to the UN agency for refugees, they are already, as of Friday, February 25, more than 50,000 to have crossed the border to Moldova or Poland.
They only took the bare minimum, walked for miles and waited hours to pass controls. After crossing the Polish border, the Ukrainian exiles are reassured. “We are so happy to be in Poland. (…) We came with our child, it’s too scary [en Ukraine]”, says a woman. Exhausted, the refugees are greeted with food by volunteers. If so many come on foot, it’s because the traffic jams are endless on the Ukrainian side: tens of kilometers of traffic jams, without moving forward.
Men aged 18 to 60, since Friday February 25, no longer have the right to leave Ukraine. “It’s because of the state of war in our country. All men are forced to stay. They must take care of our homeland”, explains a motorist. The path of the exodus also becomes complicated by the train. Passengers can only get off one at a time for checks. All tell of a trying journey, with the “fear of being bombarded”.
