France has decided to ban the import of animal meat treated with growth antibiotics. A measure long awaited by farmers. What products are affected, and why were they banned?

Animals treated with antibiotics, in order to accelerate their growth, are in the sights of the government. As of April 22, the import of meat produced with growth antibiotics will be prohibited. Beef, poultry or lamb: all meat will be checked. The practice was already banned in Europe, but not for imported meat.

In 2021, more than 900,000 tonnes of poultry were imported into Europe, mainly from Thailand, Brazil or Ukraine. This isMost countries allow growth antibiotics. If they are now banned, other antibiotics are authorized to treat sick animals. SAccording to some associations, however, their use is excessive. In France, in 2021, more than 370 tonnes of antibiotics were administered to farm animals.
