The government could have been ageist, says Marguerite Blais

The Legault government may have been ageist with seniors during the pandemic, admitted the minister responsible for seniors, Marguerite Blais, and then made amends.

His cabinet hastened to correct the situation shortly after.

She was reacting to an outing from a coalition that lamented that seniors had been infantilized since March 2020.

During question period, Liberal MP Monique Sauvé relayed their complaints.

She recalled that the Health Commissioner had also deplored the infantilization of the elderly.

In response, Ms. Blais recalled that the government wanted to protect seniors from the worst of the first wave.

“Have we done ageism somewhere? It could be,” she told the Blue Room.

“The minister did not use the right word,” subsequently indicated the minister’s press attaché, Jean-Charles Del Duchetto.

She would have liked to say rather that there would perhaps have been “surprudence”, he specified.

“It is not at all an acknowledgment that there has been ageism,” concluded Mr. Del Duchetto.
