British Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled out on Tuesday (February 22) that Russia, host of the Champions League final on May 28, could still host international football competitions after Moscow recognized pro-Russian separatist regions in eastern Ukraine.
“There is no chance of holding football tournaments in a Russia that invades sovereign countries”explained the British leader, saying he hoped that Vladimir Putin “step back from the precipice” and does not proceed to “a total invasion” from Ukraine.
British Sports Minister Nadine Dorries shared her “deep concerns” on the organization of sporting events in Russia. “We will not allow President Putin to exploit events on the international scene to legitimize his illegal invasion of Ukraine”she added, specifying that she would speak with the “competent governance bodies”. The end of the story will have to be given by UEFA, the sole decision-maker on the subject.
I have serious concerns about the sporting events due to be held in Russia, such as the Champions League Final, and will discuss with the relevant governing bodies.
We won’t allow President Putin to exploit events on the world stage to legitimize his illegal invasion of Ukraine.
