The Italian Coast Guard announced on Tuesday February 22 that it had rescued 573 migrants on the high seas overnight from Monday to Tuesday. The migrants had been spotted by the coast guard about 100 kilometers from the coast of Calabria (South), “struggling aboard two overloaded fishing boats, at the mercy of the waves, in adverse weather conditions forecast to worsen in the following hours”says a press release.
Among the migrants are 59 minors, many of whom are unaccompanied. They also recovered the body of a deceased person “who, according to the statements of the migrants, would have been dead for several days”. The survivors will be disembarked at the Sicilian port of Augusta.
Despite the cold and bad weather, 10,570 migrants have attempted the journey to Europe by sea since the beginning of the year, according to the International Organization for Migration. At least 229 of them died during the crossing over the same period.
