Vladimir Putin announced on Monday February 21 the recognition of the independence of the pro-Russian separatist zones. A red line crossed which obliges Europe to react. But in the Donbasssome are for this independence. In live from Donetsk (Ukraine)journalist Luc Lacroix takes stock of the situation.
“For the breakaway republics, this announcement is a huge victory,” says journalist Luc Lacroix from Donetskin the Donbass in Ukraine. “They had been asking Moscow for years to recognize their independence from Ukraine. Russia, which has been supporting them at arm’s length since 2014, had so far refused to take this step”he continues. When Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of their independence, “There were a few cheers and Russian flags being waved, but it was still something very isolated”reports Luc Lacroix.
This explains “first because the announcement took place just before the curfew was put in place, then because the day was again very tense, we could hear heavy gunfire in the distance” and, finally, because the inhabitants “are afraid that this announcement will push the conflict into another dimension and that it will worsen a little more”.
