Ukraine calls for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council

Ukraine on Monday called for an “immediate” meeting of the UN Security Council in the face of the threat of a Russian invasion.

“At the request of President Volodymyr Zelensky, I officially request immediate consultations of the members of the UN Security Council on behalf of Article 6 of the Budapest Memoranda,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kouleba tweeted.

The Ukrainian request comes at a time when Westerners fear an invasion of Ukraine, on the borders of which 150,000 Russian soldiers are massed and where the mediation processes, in particular French and American, seem to be at an impasse.

It is based on the Budapest Memoranda, agreements signed by Russia in 1994 guaranteeing the integrity and security of three former Soviet republics, including Ukraine, in exchange for giving up nuclear weapons inherited from the USSR. .

During the 2014 Crimean War, Ukraine had already referred to this memorandum to remind Russia of its border commitments.

These documents are not binding.

The last meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine was held on February 1, at the request of the United States, and against the wishes of Russia. It had turned into open confrontation between Washington and Moscow.
