(Kansas City) Harrison Butker had two field goals in the fourth quarter, including one from 34 yards with 1:07 left, and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the New York Giants by a score of 20-17, Monday evening.
Patrick Mahomes had 29 of his 48 passes for overhead gains of 275 yards. He threw a touchdown pass and an interception for the Chiefs (4-4), who had to overcome two more turnovers and over 100 penalty yards.
Tyreek Hill led the Kansas City squad with 12 catches for 94 yards and a major. Mecole Hardman added five catches for 63 yards. Hardman set the table for Butker’s winning field goal with a 24-yard catch in the Chiefs’ final offensive streak.
Daniel Jones threw two touchdowns and one interception for the Giants (2-6), but he also suffered three sacks. He was knocked down twice in the last round to attack his people.
It was only the Chiefs’ fourth victory in 15 games against the Giants, and the first since the 2013 season.
Mahomes and his teammates cut through the Giants’ defense on first possession, but the Chiefs quarterback suffered an interception in the end zone. It was the seventh game in a row with at least one interception for Mahomes.
The Chiefs still got points moments later, when Jones was also the victim of theft.
After Jones joined Kyle Rudolph in the end zone to allow the Giants to tie the game 7-7, the Chiefs turned to running play. Derrick Gore carried the ball seven times and tallied 43 yards to register his first NFL touchdown.
Deprived of the services of running back Saquon Barkley and receiver Kenny Golladay, the Giants were able to count on substitutes Devontae Booker and John Ross III.
At the end of the first half, the New Yorkers orchestrated an offensive streak of 86 yards and Graham Gano put the finishing touches with a field goal of 23 yards. Early in the fourth quarter, receiver Evan Engram caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Jones to give the Giants a 17-14 lead.
For the first time since the Chiefs’ victory against the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV, in February 2020, Quebecer Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was in uniform.
The 30-year-old offensive lineman, who injured his right hand at Chiefs training camp, was serving as a reserve for Andy Reid’s team.
