The existence of the approach to the FIA, which manages F1 operations, was revealed on Friday by Mario Andretti, Michael’s father, who posted the information on Twitter. Himself champion of the 1978 season in F1, the patriarch writes that the team “Andretti Global has all the necessary resources and fulfills all the conditions”. He adds that his son is only waiting for the FIA’s decision.
Andretti Autosport initially declined to comment on Mario Andretti’s public outing before changing its mind and confirming that an official request had been forwarded to the FIA. However, no further details were provided.
The patriarch has always openly supported his son’s ambitions to expand the activities of the motor racing team in order to integrate the most prestigious circuit in the world. Michael Andretti also raced in F1 for a season in 1993.
Mario Andretti is second in IndyCar Series history and Michael Andretti is fourth. Michael Andretti currently owns teams competing in the IndyCar, IMSA, Formula E and Extreme E circuits.
Last year, the Andretti clan tried to get their hands on the Alfa Romeo team with the aim of bringing American driver Colton Herta to F1. The transaction fell through, however, due to disagreements over control of operations. A registration request directly to the FIA could accelerate the arrival on the track of Andretti cars.
Herta, who turns 22 next month, is among the favorites to win the IndyCar championship this season. He wants to at least get a chance to race in F1.
Formula 1 was his first career goal before returning to the United States for the 2017 season.
