from Chopin to the repertoire of Michael Jackson, candlelight concerts are a hit all over the world

Attending a Candlelight concert in the Chapelle de la Trinité in Lyon is an attractive idea for a Valentine’s Day evening! Outside, the crowd throngs. Installed in the middle of this exceptional place entirely lit by candlelight, a piano, surrounded by the public. The atmosphere is intimate. Tonight, Frederic Chopin is in the spotlight.

Seated in front of the instrument, Franck Laurent-Granpré. This young classically trained pianist and composer from Lyon (the conservatories of Geneva, Lyon and Paris) also appreciates eclectic projects and Candlelight offers him new visibility. The talented soloist takes the audience on a one-hour journey through Chopin’s work by candlelight.

On the program: the most famous scores (excerpts) of the Polish composer. Waltzes in A minor and in E minor, Nocturne in C sharp minor, Impromptu #1. The public savors this unusual concert, captivated by the music and the anecdotes told by the soloist, between each piece. Frédéric Chopin indeed composed his most famous works during each significant episode of his life, such as during the Russian invasion of Warsaw or his meeting with George Sand, his great love.

If the show may seem a little short to the most connoisseurs, the public leaves the Chapel of the Trinity with a smile on their face while outside, the queue for the next show is getting longer.

Candlelight: it’s a concert in an ephemeral and exceptional place lit by the light of thousands of candles. A unique musical and sensory experience for an often neophyte audience. The opportunity to discover the most famous classical works in a unique way. Initially, the idea was to give another impression of classical music, to introduce it to a new generation since 70% of Candlelight viewers are under 40 years old.
