Several opposition figures accuse Emmanuel Macron, not yet officially a candidate for the presidential election, of campaigning by taking advantage of his position as President of the Republic.
Valérie Pécresse accused Emmanuel Macron of having come to campaign in Nice “with the means of the State, with the means of the taxpayer“, while the rebellious MEP Manon Aubry addressed the same reproach to him. Christian Jacob, president of the Les Républicains party, even went so far as to speak of “embezzlement of public funds“.
The financing of electoral campaigns in France is supervised by the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing. An authority to which the president has no obligation until he is a candidate. Nothing illegal, therefore, but once a candidate, he will have to declare the expenses of his electoral trips made since July 1, 2021. The commission must then investigate for six months before validating or invalidating the campaign accounts.
