The candidate Les Républicains Valérie Pécresse affirmed this in her campaign program: “ The annual number of victims of damage to property or persons is close to 10 million. [Pourtant]France now has fewer detainees than in 2017, when Madame Taubira was Keeper of the Seals. »
” Restore public order in the streets “: this is the objective displayed by Valérie Pécresse in her presidential program. With this statement: The annual number of victims of damage to property or persons is close to 10 million. [Pourtant]France now has fewer detainees than in 2017, when Madame Taubira was Keeper of the Seals. »
Admittedly, the number of detainees did indeed reach historically low levels a few months ago. At issue: the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to early releases and slowed down the courts. But a catch-up took place in 2021. There were thus in France, on December 1, nearly 70,000 detainees, slightly more than the 68,400 detainees in 2017.
The candidate’s program is also erroneous concerning attacks on property and persons. According to the latest available statistics, the public prosecutor’s offices in France handled 2.1 million cases in which at least one victim appeared in 2019. More specifically, there were 1.3 million victims of property crimes, and 860,000 victims of attacks on persons. Is therefore much less than the “ 10 millions put forward by Valérie Pécresse.
Even focusing on “declared” victims, and not necessarily registered by the courts, the figure for candidate LR is not exact. In 2018, INSEE identified 1.1 million people claiming to be victims of an act of violence, and around 5 million claiming to have suffered damage to property. Almost twice less than what we read in the program of candidate LR.
