Offer tax rebates to middle-class owners, but increase the bill for owners of more expensive homes: this is what Valérie Plante, the mayoress of Montreal, is proposing if she is elected for a future term.
The head of Projet Montréal presented Monday morning her commitment to establish a differentiated tax rate for residential properties.
“This measure will allow part of the residential tax burden to be transferred to the most expensive homes, and an equivalent tax rebate will be offered to middle-class homeowners, who need a break. And we want the middle class to stay in Montreal, ”explained Mme Plant at a press conference, in a park in the Ahuntsic district.
Projet Montréal plans to impose a lower tax rate on the first $ 500,000 of a property’s value. For a residence of $ 514,000, the savings would represent $ 450 per year, said Mr.me Plant.
This measure will cost the City nothing, since “the better-off will pay the difference,” she added.
As the last week of the campaign begins before the November 7 election, Valérie Plante plans to increase the number of announcements and meetings with the population in all corners of Montreal, she said. “We want to keep the boroughs where we already have elected Project Montreal officials, but we also want to make gains”,
