In order to create affordable housing projects, the city of Montreal is giving itself a new right of first refusal to broaden its possibilities. The City may also acquire existing residential rental buildings in order to preserve their affordability.
The right of pre-emption allows the City to equalize any offer to purchase when selling land previously designated. A first version was adopted in 2020 to allow it to build social housing.
“Today, we continue to innovate by building on these solid foundations to ensure that all Montreal households can find a roof that meets their needs and respects their ability to pay,” said Benoit Dorais, manager of the residence in the city.
The by-law for the right of pre-emption for residential purposes will be presented to the next city council, for adoption in March 2022. As Projet Montréal holds the majority, it is however a formality.
Notices of subjection will be sent for each of the lots covered by the right of first refusal during the coming spring.
