We, cis, lesbian, gay, bisexual and pansexual personalities of Quebec’s cultural milieu bring our support and solidarity to the trans, non-binary and intersex communities of Quebec, who are currently living through a disturbing and painful moment in their history – you have seen it. in Elle Quebec 1, you saw it in The duty2. Bill 2, in its current form, seeks to divide our communities, to divide the population by creating two categories belonging to a bygone era.
It seems the government has not learned from its history. In 2002, he attempted to create two types of couples: those who are married and those who are “in a civil union”. It was already problematic: when there is a legal category that is created only for “strangers”, it stigmatizes and opens the door to discrimination. We didn’t accept it at the time, and we made our voices heard loud and clear. We will do the same this time.
We often hear that today there are too many words to talk about our loves, our identities, our bodies. However, the state grants itself the right to choose the labels that suit those concerned. He says pick a box as quickly as possible, then add another in case we change our mind later? It is incongruous and distressing.
We will not accept new divisions in the Quebec population, divisions that create two classes. We keep an eye on any attempt to fragment our struggles, our rights, our bodily sovereignty.
We believe that it is possible to do better, to choose the right words and the right means to continue to be at the forefront of LGBTQI + progress in the world, as a Quebec nation, as we have been. for the past 40 years.
Trans, non-binary and intersex people in Quebec represent a cultural gem: we must protect them at all costs. We know the government thought it was doing the right thing: that is why we are asking it to go back to the drawing board with the people concerned to rethink what a legislature that respects and recognizes them would look like.
You recognize our loves and our families; it is just one more step to recognize that the fluidity of genres and bodies is finally expressed in our institutions as in our lives.
