(Washington) The new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile took the lead in the North American box office this weekend as soon as it was released in theaters, according to provisional figures from a specialized firm published on Sunday.

The film, which chronicles one of the most famous investigations of Belgian detective and mustachioed Hercule Poirot, brought in $12.8 million from Friday to Sunday, according to data published by Exhibitor Relations.
Written in 1937 by the queen of detective novels and already brought to the screen in 1978 with Peter Ustinov and Jane Birkin, the film is this time directed by Kenneth Branagh, who takes on the role of the shrewd investigator five years after the success of his Murder on the Orient Express.
The retro charm of this classic has relegated to second place jackass forever, new opus of the band of crazy Americans of the same name which functions, him, on gags with not necessarily delicate humor. For its second week in theaters, it earned $8.1 million.
With $8 million in revenue over the weekend, the romantic comedy Marry Me, released strategically just before Valentine’s Day, is placed just behind. Jennifer Lopez plays a superstar who marries on a whim, a divorced math teacher played by Owen Wilson.
For its ninth week in theaters, Spider-Man: No Way Homethe latest installment in the Adventures of Spider-Man, drops to fourth place but again pockets $7.2 million, bringing its total box office receipts to over $1 billion.
The Thriller Blacklight starring Liam Neeson came in at number five with $3.6 million earned for its release weekend.
