A stranded humpback whale weighing nearly 10 tonnes has been found in Pas-de-Calais. This is the second cetacean found in a few months in this area.
Nearly 10 meters, and at least as many tons. It was in the early morning that a walker, Jean-Claude Hedevin, found a whale stranded on the beach of Calais (Pas-de-Calais). The carcass attracts the curious, but the priority now is to move the animal. “We contacted the elected officials of the city of Calais to be able to have heavy means, to be able to bring the whale up on the dune, so that it does not leave with the tide“, Explain Yohann Demassieux, of the league animal protection in Calais.
For the moment, it is impossible to know the circumstances of the death of the whale, rather used to warm seas. One of the hypotheses is that it moved closer to the coasts to feed. “These are animals that haven’t eaten and that have to tap into their fat and their muscles as fuel, and since they don’t eat, inevitably, they will be prone to illnesses, to be much weaker“, highlighted Jackie Karpouzopoulos, manager of the national Channel and North Sea stranding network.
