Violence on the increase in the Manche department. Frédérick Périssat, prefect of La Manche, Michael Giraudet, public prosecutor of Coutances and Yves Le Clair prosecutor of Cherbourg presented their 2021 report this Friday, February 11. They notice a jump of 21.5% in attacks on people in the department. Compared to the previous year, sexual violence increased by 38.9% in the territory and physical violence in general by 17.60%.

Effects of the health crisis?

Figures to be highlighted with successive confinements in the context of the health crisis, according to the Prefecture. However, we note a significant increase compared to before the health crisis, in 2019, with a 15.8% increase in sexual abuse in two years in the department. Regarding domestic violence, the figures rise to more than 35% between 2019 and 2021 and 34% for domestic violence. This represents 1,591 facts recorded by the authorities, compared to 1,178 two years ago. A phenomenon on the increase in recent years, but this significant increase remains “exceptional”, underlines the prefect of the Channel.

It is clear that this aggressiveness, this violence within the couple is important. We all need to get together. Fortunately, the victims no longer suffer in silence, but they share these facts. Despite everything, there is a disinhibition of violence with the taking of psychotropic drugs and alcohol – Frédéric Périssat – Prefect of Manche

It is important to note that not all violence is recordedall of which were not followed by a complaint to the police.
