Almost 20 years since the singer, pianist and composer Nina Simone passed away. An immense artist, committed activist for civil rights, whose powerful and ample voice conveys anger, suffering, light. The compilation which appears these days at Verve brings together the essentials of its repertoire (Mississippi Goddam, Strange Fruit, I Love You Porgy, I Put a Spell on You) and is quite similar to the mauve anthology released by BMG in 2003. On the quarter of this double album, we entrusted Nina’s standards — diamonds — to artists, DJs and producers, many of whom have an electro-club signature -dance that does not go well with Nina. Listening to the sublime See-Line Woman and feeling good becomes downright painful. Phew! No star for Floorplan, Riton and Joel Corry’s notebook. On the other hand, Hot Chip and Sofi Tukker are doing well. The sound of Rudimental is more compatible with the vocal presence of the singer, and the British duo HONNE surprises by wrapping their voice in a pretty line of guitar under the influence of Johnny Greenwood.
