Since this crisis continues, I wonder why the track of driving and transport licenses has not been discussed in the public square. Chantal Hébert briefly mentioned it on a Patrice Roy show last week; Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath also spoke about it in that province’s parliament.
Indeed, would it not be possible for the Canadian government to call on the governments concerned to act on the various permits issued to the truckers and other motorists involved? These are obviously driving licenses and IRP permits (International Registration Plan) that allow road transport between provinces and with the United States. The federal Department of Transport certainly has a role to play in issuing this type of permit.
For example, truck drivers and occupying motorists could be informed that they must vacate the premises within a given time limit or risk having their driver’s license or IRP license suspended for at least three months. This rather soft approach compared to a more muscular police method would certainly have a positive effect!
