The housing crisis took on a hideous face on January 31 with the threat of eviction brutally served by bailiffs on the elderly of the Mont-Carmel residence. A few days later, Quebec launched its new Affordable Housing Program, endowed with $200 million. Paradoxical coincidence! Such subsidies, whatever their merits, cannot cover the government’s inaction to limit uncontrolled evictions by real estate predators, particularly against seniors. Such indifference is incoherent. What good are emphatic declarations of intent to care for the elderly without strong measures to protect their right to live in peace and decent conditions?
