A number to know when traveling in the EU

Decided by the European Union in 1991, the number was set up in 1996 in France. Since then, the 27 Member States have been using it. The idea of a single number is intended to respond to the growth in travel by European citizens within the EU. The caller answers in the language of the country from which the call originates, but can redirect you to an operator who speaks your language.

The number 112 is free from a landline or mobile and it works without network or SIM card. In France, it does not replace other emergency numbers but allows rapid redirection to the right service: Samu, firefighters or the police. It is managed by the fire department.

Of the 150,000 emergency calls received and handled at 18 and 112 last year in Indre-et-Loire, nearly 50,000 are so-called unjustified calls.
