Canadian Isabelle Weidemann won the silver medal in the 5,000 meter long track speed skating event on Thursday at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The lanky 26-year-old skater from Ottawa clocked 6:48.18 en route to her second medal since the start of the Games. On Saturday, Weidemann had won the bronze in the 3000 meters.
Unsurprisingly, the Dutch Irene Schouten took the gold medal following an imperial performance. Schouten clocked 6:43.51, an Olympic record.
The old Olympic mark was 6:46.91. It was made by Germany’s Claudia Pechstein at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.
Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic was third in 6:50.09.
