AT On the occasion of the Abbé Pierre Foundation’s annual report on poor housing, the 20 Hours newscast dwells on the difficulties in obtaining housing. According to the report, 12 million people are at risk and social housing is insufficient. On the set, the journalist Jean Paul Chapel details the figures of this study.
The number of households waiting for social housing has only increased since the start of Emmanuel Macron’s five-year term. 2.2 million households are thus concerned by a request for HLM housing. Sadly, “with the rise in real estate prices, demand increases. And the supply of social housing does not follow”, explains journalist Jean Paul Chapel. The lack of land to build or the lack of political will are some of the reasons why housing is lacking. Result: of 124,000 homes built in 2016, there were only 95,000 last year.
Some town halls also do not play the game because the law obliges towns to have a minimum of social housing. “For 5 years, 550 have not met their target. Half of these 550 have been sanctioned. The other half have escaped fines because they have shown goodwill or because the authorities have been lax”reveals Jean Paul Chapel.
