For his last individual race at the Olympics, Charles Hamelin failed to qualify for the final of the 1500 meters in speed skating, Wednesday, in Beijing.
Steven Dubois was the only one of the three Canadians entered in this event to advance to the A final. Pascal Dion also failed in the semi-finals. Dubois eventually won silver in this event.
Participating in his fifth and final Olympic Games, Hamelin, 37, was aiming to add a sixth medal to his Olympic record.
Boutin eliminated in the 1000m
Canadians Alyson Charles and Courtney Sarault made it through the preliminaries in the women’s 1,000 metres, while Kim Boutin was eliminated.
Boutin was a few meters from winning her wave, when she stupidly lost her balance and fell.
The 27-year-old Sherbrooke native won bronze in the women’s 500 meters on Monday. It was her fourth career Olympic medal.
Sarault, of Moncton, won his heat. Charles, of Montreal, finished third in her heat, but advanced to the quarter-finals after the referee ruled that France’s Tifany Huot Marchand had bumped into her.
Only the top two skaters from each heat made it through the preliminaries, along with the fastest four skaters who finished in third place.
The women’s 1000 meters heats will be presented on Friday.
The women’s 3,000-metre semi-finals are also scheduled for Wednesday.
