The Progressive Conservatives who form the government in Manitoba have chosen Heather Stefanson as their new leader and the next premier of the province.
Ms Stefanson, the province’s former health minister, ran against former MP Shelly Glover and won by a margin of less than 400 votes.
“I am ready to take on the many challenges we face,” she said in her victory speech. We will meet these challenges together. “
The leadership race began this summer after former Prime Minister Brian Pallister announced he was stepping down.
The race was recently marred by complaints that many party members did not receive mail-in ballots in time to vote, and Ms Glover called for the vote count to be delayed.
Heather Stefanson will become Manitoba’s first female premier once she is sworn in.
The next elections are scheduled for October 2023.
