Emmanuel Macron will meet Vladimir Putin in Moscow (Russia) this Monday, February 7. A one-on-one to try to lower the pressure in the thorny issue of the Ukrainian crisis.

In the trenches, Ukrainian soldiers prepare for the worst. Over more than 400 kilometers, between Ukraine and the separatist enclave of Donbass, they spend their days observing the enemy. According to the United States, Russia could invade Ukraine at any time. American intelligence estimates that 110,000 Russian soldiers are massed at the borders. To defend the NATO countries against any type of aggression, the United States has just sent 1,700 additional soldiers to Poland.

In this tense context, the French president spoke on the evening of Sunday February 6 with Joe Biden. Emmanuel Macron reaffirms his desire to discuss the terms of the de-escalation. “By going directly to Moscow, there is this desire on the part of Emmanuel Macron to show that he is capable of taking a geographical step forward. Which does not necessarily mean substantive concessions”, says Benjamin Morel, political scientist and lecturer at Paris Panthéon-Assas.
