In four months, Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) has experienced three garbage collectors’ strikes. Officers are back on the streets, but tons of trash still needs to be cleared. At the call of associations, several hundred volunteers rolled up their sleeves on Sunday 6 February.
Gloves, pliers and garbage bags. This is the volunteer collector’s kit distributed by associations on Sunday February 6 in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). After two weeks of garbage collectors’ strike, several hundred residents answered the call to clean up the coastline. The mistral blew hard and scattered waste near the beaches: plastic, cardboard, cans or cigarette butts. Some volunteer pickers are shocked at the state of their neighborhood.
For associations for the defense of the environment, this citizen collection must be used to transform anger into awareness. According to the organizers, at least a ton of waste was collected by the volunteer collectors in the morning. Garbage is sorted and then a small part will be recycled.
